How we address inequalities

The VCFSE sector plays an important role in helping to reduce inequalities by working closely with people in their communities.

Our sector helps to address inequalities in many ways:

We can reach vulnerable groups

VCFSE organisations often work with people who don’t always get the help they need from regular services, and many deliver direct services themselves such as food banks, advice services, counselling or training. Many groups and organisations specifically focus upon vulnerable groups such as homeless people, families on low-incomes, refugees, elderly people, LGBTQ+ communities.  Local organisations are also more likely to provide services that are more tailored to specific needs.

We actively encourage social inclusion

VCFSE organisation often provide safe spaces where people can find belonging and support.  Where social isolation exists, organisations often offer community activities, support and events. We promote diversity and challenge discrimination, helping people to connect with others.

We’re flexible and innovative

VCFSE organisations often develop to fill gaps where needs exist and aren’t being met.  VCSFE organisations can also respond more quickly to community needs than large public services. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We advocate for change

VCFSE organisations work to raise awareness of inequalities and the needs of disadvantaged groups.  Groups often campaign locally and nationally to change policies that impact upon their communities and advocate for better access to services.  Where we can’t change the system, we will often develop our own activities and services.

We empower people and communities

VCFSE organisations help individuals and communities to develop new skills and offer informal and formal learning opportunities.  This can help to build the capacity of individuals and communities to improve their lives, or circumstances, or communities.
